The answer is that the Resort is beginning a $1.7 million lobby renovation project, so the holiday décor never came out of storage. During the renovation project, Resort guests will have access to all Resort facilities and amenities, including a temporary front desk and lobby, located in an unused store in the Gallery of Shops on the lobby-level of the Tower. “We’re extremely excited about the project which is expected to take about a month and a half, with the lobby fully functional by early to mid-February,” stated Resort Executive Vice President and General Manager Andrew Bateman. “Finishing touches, including installation of a revolving entry door and renovation of the porte cochere, are slated to take place in April, when the weather warms up.”....

LOW IMPACT DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP ON MAY 24, 2005

In partnership with Dow•Howell•Gilmore•Associates Inc and Northwood University, the Midland Conservation District will be sponsoring a seminar on May 24, 2005, at the Griswold Center on the Northwood University campus. Titled “HOW TO ACHIEVE HARMONY BETWEEN THE BUILT AND NATURAL ENVIRONMENTS,” this seminar will show participants how to develop a site with minimal disruption of the surrounding environment. By working with Dow•Howell•Gilmore•Associates Inc, the Midland Conservation District will use this project as a case study on applicable low impact development practices for the region. There have been many stories in the news in recent years chronicling the experiences of individuals or groups dealing with this issue; sometimes with less than successful results. This seminar will deal with the proper procedures in dealing with the state’s laws governing wetland areas.

Charles Servinski, Chairman of the Midland Conservation District, stated “The Midland Conservation District’s mission is to find environmentally cooperative means for land use and sustainability by providing a gateway for information, resources and partnerships. This project is a prime example of the district’s ability to be a gateway for information, resources, and partnerships.”....

MIDLAND ARCHITECTURAL FIRM WINS DESIGN COMPETITION FOR NEW HOTEL TOWER IN KALAMAZOO

Dow•Howell•Gilmore•Associates Inc of Midland was recently selected through a design competition to be the architects for a new nine story hotel tower to be built in downtown Kalamazoo. The new building will be an addition to the Radisson Plaza Hotel, a 650,000 square foot hotel and conference center located in the center of the downtown area. In addition to designing the new tower, Dow•Howell•Gilmore•Associates Inc will also design a complete new exterior for the 30 year old building. The project is slated for completion in June of 2003.

“We are very pleased to win this design competition for such an important landmark structure,” said Donald J. Koster, President of Dow•Howell•Gilmore•Associates Inc. “It indicates that architectural firms from the Central Michigan area can compete on a statewide and national basis.” Dow•Howell•Gilmore•Associates Inc was invited to compete with four other firms from Chicago, New York and Kalamazoo. The competition required the five firms to each submit a design concept for the project which was then presented to a selection committee.

“We decided to select an architect through a design competition because we wanted a dynamic signature building that would also fit into the overall character of downtown Kalamazoo,” said William D. Johnston, President and CEO of Greenleaf Companies, owner of the Radisson Plaza Hotel. “For that reason, we invited five architectural firms who had established reputations for designing this type of building to compete for our commission.”....
