Don
has over 28 years of experience in architectural programming
and design. His past commissions for which he was the
principal design architect include the Legislative Office Building
for the State of Michigan House of Representatives and Senate.
Prior to the design phase, Don headed the team which conducted
the space needs analysis study. This study also assessed
which functions would remain in the State Capitol Building and
which would move to a new site, depending on the functional
and organizational interrelationships.
Other projects
for which Don headed the programming efforts and was principal
designer include the $120 million Steelcase
Corporate Development Center "Pyramid" in Grand Rapids,
the $85 million Nissan Research and Development
Technical Headquarters in Farmington Hills, and the $25
million Waldo Library and Academic Computing Center at Western
Michigan University.

A
"Celebration of innovation" is Steelcase's own description
of their Corporate Development Center.
Steelcase needed to streamline operations, improve efficiency,
and reduce development time for new products. |
| Visual
and verbal communication are emphasized - from the four
corner entrances that open into a striking atrium with five
story pendulum sculpture suspended over a reflective pool,
to extensive use of escalators.
Don
Koster was the lead designer for this facility while with
the WBDC Group.

Nissan
Research and Development, Inc. wanted their facility to
represent the company's commitment to the North American
automotive market. By blending elements of both Japanese
and American cultures, the facility promotes efficient interaction
and communication between all team members. Two separate
structures are connected by an 11,000 square foot atrium
which functions as the employee entrance, cafeteria and
major assembly space. Interior plans provide for changing
space requirements with an open layout for workstations.
Don Koster was the lead designer for this facility while
with the WBDC Group. |
